A LETTER FROM PESACH SHEFER

by -
Friday, May 10, 2013

For me, Pesach Shefer, son of survivors who went through labor and concentration camps - the trip was the resolution of many questions in my life.  I grew up in a home with parents who had gone through camps in Transnistra, Bucovina - what was then Romania.  My parents never shared any of their experiences or feelings about them with me and never told me anything that had happened to them during that period.

Zev Wolfson, the noted philanthropist who passed away a month ago, once yelled at my boss, the director of Nefesh Yehudi, for spending NIS 11 on a bottle of mineral water in the lobby of the Plaza Hotel. “There is water in the faucet,” he chided him, “what do you need to spend 11 shekels for!?”

I AM MY PRAYER

by Miriam Kosman -
Friday, August 24, 2012

G-d, I prayed, just like I was supposed to, just like they told me to. I asked You for something. I begged you. I cried my heart out. But you said no. They say You hear prayers. They say You are kind and You are good. But still You said no. That makes no sense to me.

Dear Not a Martyr,

An exercise I often do with my students at Nefesh Yehudi on the first day of the semester is something I call “Station Identification.” I ask the students various questions, and they position themselves along an imaginary human graph, with one wall of the room representing one hundred and the opposite wall representing zero. One of the questions I ask is about ethics.

A PASSING ON DURING THE NIGHT OF PASSING OVER

Seder night is a night where the eyes of the Jewish nation, rest unwaveringly on their children.  The mah nishtana, the rituals that need to be explained, the question and answer format—all put our children at center stage.

WHERE ARE ALL THE NAYSAYERS WHEN YOU NEED THEM?

This kind of meeting between supposedly disinterested and antagonistic secular students and impossibly stubborn haredim was never supposed to take place!

CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN

Dear Miriam,

Why do we fast on Yom Kippur?
I thought Judaism was into happiness, not suffering.

A TRIBUTE TO MR. ZEV WOLFSON

1. One of the most embarrassing things in the world is having to flatter the rich. It's twice as embarrassing when one finds himself in a situation where he has to speak to a very wealthy gvir from the podium of a fancy dinner, or have a personal conversation with him in a hotel lobby, and effusively praise him for his work, righteousness and modesty while dancing and prancing around him.

THE CYNIC IN THE CORNER OF OUR HEART

So what did Amalek do that was so terrible? What about Amalek warrants such an unforgiving approach?

Purim is such a happy day, but lurking in the background is the unforgiving mitzvah of eradicating all memory of Amalek. Amid all the merrymaking, gifts of food and charity to the poor, what are we supposed to make of a mitzvah with such a violent tone?

THE FLIP SIDE: ALL EARS

It wasn't we, the 'frummies,' against those weird non-observant Jews. It was just all of us, together.

WHO'S BEING PUSHED TO THE BACK OF THE BUS?

I know I am supposed to feel like a repressed, suppressed, oppressed and perhaps depressed victim. But what if I don’t?
An acquaintance of mine who writes for a secular women’s magazine here in Israel called to ask if I would be willing to be interviewed about the hot topic of the day.
